Tutoring at Nīkau School
Does your child need a little extra support to feel confident with maths?
Are you a homeschooling parent looking for structured, hands-on sessions with real Montessori materials?
We offer one-on-one maths tutoring with one of our trained Montessori guides designed to spark understanding and nurture a genuine love of learning. Whether your child is homeschooled or attending another school, we tailor each session to meet their unique pace and needs.
Why Montessori?
Mathematics in a Montessori environment is more than numbers on a page—it’s an exploration of patterns, relationships, and meaning. Through carefully designed materials and a concrete-to-abstract progression, children don’t just do maths—they understand it.
At Nīkau Montessori School, we use time-tested Montessori materials such as the Golden Beads, Stamp Game, Fraction Insets, Bead Chains, and Checkerboard to help children truly grasp mathematical concepts with their hands before committing them to memory. These tools allow children to see and feel place value, carry out operations like long division, and understand the logic behind it all—not just follow steps by rote.
Here’s what makes the Montessori maths curriculum so valuable:
Hands-On & Visual
Children manipulate materials that make invisible concepts visible. For example, a child can see the difference between 100 and 1,000 by holding and comparing the golden beads.
Deep Conceptual Understanding
Instead of memorising formulas, children explore why and how things work. They discover patterns, relationships, and mental shortcuts organically—building strong number sense that lasts a lifetime.
Individualised & Mastery-Based
Each child progresses at their own pace. They don’t move on until they truly understand, which means less frustration and fewer gaps down the track.
Builds Confidence & Independence
Children become active participants in their learning. The joy of discovery and the sense of accomplishment they experience fosters a genuine love of maths—and belief in their own abilities.
Foundational for Lifelong Learning
Montessori maths isn’t just for early learners. It lays the groundwork for complex, abstract thinking—making future learning in algebra, geometry, and problem-solving much more accessible.
Flexible Session Times to Suit Your Schedule
We understand that every family’s routine is different, especially for those navigating home education or juggling after-school commitments. That’s why we offer flexible tutoring times to make high-quality, individualised support as accessible as possible.
Tutoring sessions are 1 hour long, and we offer two options:
During the School Day
Ideal for home-educated learners, these sessions are available Monday to Friday during standard school hours. They offer a quiet, focused environment where your child can explore mathematics with uninterrupted attention—perfect for integrating into your homeschooling rhythm.
After School Sessions
Designed for children who attend school but need extra support to revisit tricky concepts, deepen understanding, or simply rediscover confidence in maths. These sessions are a great way to top up classroom learning in a one-on-one setting where your child sets the pace.
Session Pricing & Booking Options
We offer a simple and flexible pricing structure so you can choose the level of support that best suits your child’s needs and your family’s schedule.
